For the last few months I have been taking part in the One Four Challenge. This challenge was created by Robyn from Captivate Me; in the challenge you take one picture and each week edit the picture in a different way. At the end of the month you have four interpretations of one picture.
This month I have gone back to the summer when I took a picture of a flower looking down. I have previously edited this picture but was caught in the square crop cliche trap, you can see that picture here.
The picture went back to the drawing board. I first use the shake reduction filter in Photoshop as capture sharpening. The shot wasn’t taken with an exposure that would cause blur, the shake reduction filter is good for just tightening up those smaller details. In Lightroom I used the curves to create a soft cross processing effect and used split toning to control the colour pallet with greens in the shadows and yellows in the highlights. Some slight tonal adjustments, sharpening and noise reduction were the final steps.
I would love to know what you think of the edit, as well as any ideas you may have for future edits in this challenge.

Am gonna put in a post tomorrow
Beautifully sharp, noise free and vibrant, Ben. Wonder what you’ll be doing with this?…..
Lovely image, very sharp and vibrant. I like this crop more, it sits better in this frame. As for future edits, I hope you’ll play with colors, both of the flower and background, there are endless possibilities.
Thank you Lore,I like this crop more than the square, it feels less forced. There are a lot of possibilities and i most definitely will be playing with the colours.
Beautiful! I’m so curious of your process for the next 4 weeks…
To be honest so am I Amy. I do have ideas in the back of my head.
Crstal clear .. Great pic 🙂
Crystal ..whoops
Thanks, it is a very sharp picture.
This photo just begs for a square crop – I’m looking forward to seeing how you move forward with the challenge!
I know it begs for it and I did crop it previously. It felt lazy because it begged for it. sometimes going against the norm can create something special.
PS. I just went to check out your instagram link at the top and the URL is missing some punctuation and so doesn’t link properly.
Thanks for the heads up I have just fixed it. Should work now.
Beautiful bright, clear, sharp picture. The colours are really nice in this edit, but I bet there is loads you could do with them to get a different look. Very exciting!
Thanks Katie, most of those things come from shooting. I have a few ideas about the comings weeks.
beautiful image!!!
Thank you
I like the vibrant colour of this photo! I can’t wait to see what you will do over the next 3 weeks!
I like the colours in this shot as well. The next couple of weeks will be interesting.
Beautiful
Thank you, remember to check out next weeks post where I will have a different version of this shot.
Great shot! Lots of options: color changes, soft dreamy blur on edges of flower with sharp center, selective color, or maybe even a “negative” look. Or, even a tight crop on just the center of the flower and a few petals. So many options!
Hi Michelle, There are quite a few options with this picture. I am not sure if I am going to go with the square crop as the flower has a lot of room to breathe in this shot and I like that natural deadish space. Colours will be played with though.
Hey Ben, have just found this – completely missed you again.
I like the light on this flower and definitely prefer this version to the square crop. I wonder if you’d consider cropping the flower closer on one side, bringing us in, with petals touching an edge if it looks right. I like doing that – it creates energy 😃
A pretty flower!
It happens with me, I scan through the posts and then there is one i haven’t seen.
I have put off the crop because I feel that the cropping will reduce the impact that it has in the rectangle frame. Saying that I have decided I will crop week 1 and 2 and show them in the gallery in week 3 because a lot of people seem to want to see the picture cropped.
Thanks for that.
Ok, cool I like that idea – will be interesting to see.
I really like that you like your negative space in this image. Sometimes you just get a feel for what you want – other times you try stuff. Look forward to it.
I also think that the different crop helps to make people stop and look instead of saying, oh yeah another flower.
Yes again I agree Ben 😃
I’m of the mind that I like this not being cropped, at least in this week. It has the feeling of later summer, I can picture the warm, calm bliss of a summer sunset and coming across this simple beauty. I think it works really well for a flower portrait. 🙂
Thank you, the cross process wasnt too strong which gives it these nice warm colours. Quite a transform when you think I took it at high noon in the middle of summer.
Indeed a nice transformation.
