One Four Challenge; In My Room Black & White

The one four challenge is where you take one picture and over a month each week edit the picture in a different way.  At the end of the month you have four different images and four different interpretations of the image. You can read more about the challenge here.

I have said this a few times with the One Four Challenge, there is always a Black and white post in the series. This week I did take on a comment by Lynne Ayers who noted that the chair and the background needed a bit of separation. I wanted also to have a contrasted image and maybe a bit more grungy and gritty than last weeks, although keeping the chair smooth.

In my room Bw

I took last week’s edit and created a virtual copy. I reset the image except for some cloning I did, to start with a blank slate. As with last week most of the adjustments were done with the gradient, radial and brush. First I converted the image to black and white using one of my Daguerreotype preset. I used a gradient on the background to darken the image as well are reducing the sharpness to soften the image hopefully creating some separation. I used an adjusted radial tool to tone the foreground and another to tone the chair.

I like how in this edit it feels as if the light is shining on the chair. The light feels quite directional like a light in the ceiling shining down cast the rest of the room into shadow.

I would love to know what you think and any comments you or ideas you have.

Also remember to check out Robyn’s post for this week.

  1. I do see greater separation this week, Ben. Subject is well suited to black and white. I like how the graffiti upper right balances the chair making an interesting and dynamic composition. That balance and juxtaposing is more obvious in the bw version.

  2. I didnt notice it last week, as I was so taken with your image. An astute observation from Lynne. This really works Ben! The B&W and your adjustments definitely bring the chair forward in this edition.
Yes, love the spotlight on the chair. The wall definitely appears to be in the background and who knows now what might be in those dark shadows. Fabulous!!
What is a virtual copy please? Curious minds… 😃

    • Thank you Livonne. The colour version had a lot of midtones contrast pumped into it which gives the texture. I suppose with the black and white I was really going for separation of subject and background.

  3. You certainly have achieved your aim for this week. The photo is quite special and evocative of a lot of emotion, I feel. The monochrome adds to this feeling of desertion, abandonment, yet with a small sprig of hope! I am looking forward to seeing what you do with it in coming weeks.

  4. Not really sure where I should ask this, but since we are part of this group together, I thought I’d ask you here. I’ve been feeling kinda cramped in my theme and I really like your theme, so I just switch to FotoFolio (with a different color palette, of course). My question to you is how do you get your additional pages to act like your main page? I’ve been making my tutorial links/images by hand with tables… it’s time consuming and it doesn’t get updated as often as it should. But if this theme has some kind of auto collection for a page, that would be wonderful. Thanks for any help or advice you can give. ~nic

    • I created categories for my posts and then added the catagory to the menu. When writing the post I select the catagory from the side and when posted it is automatically added to the catagory page. You can also go to old posts and add the catagory as well. I hope that makes sense.

      • Thanks, that’s what I suspected after I asked the question. Unfortunately, I’ve been using ‘tags’ so I’ll have to go back and edit to add ‘categories’… I guess now I know what the difference is. 🙂
